Icon usage in Tigris

The techniques shown here (view source) make no use of the img tag, keeping verbose details like height, width, spacing, border treatments, and pathname of images out of HTML and in the style system, where they can be managed most cleanly. Beat the rush and retire img before XHTML 2 scraps it formally.

Two styles of tree browser

In this first group of 4, the icon and text are integral (same link or other element). CVSWeb's UI works this way.

In this second group, the icon and text are separate links, with the icon having a textual fallback (for Nav4 and other special cases). Nidaba (file-sharing component of SourceCast) works this way.

To represent logical nesting, use ul/li:

When it isn't possible actually to nest the markup (e.g., when tree must be smooshed across multiple table rows), use the tiern classes on the containing blocks. The table below also shows (nonsensical) usage for sortable columns - note arrow widgets in table headings:

Select Name Files Reserved by [sort up] Last modified [sort down] Astrological sign
0 3/28/2002 username
0 3/28/2002 username
3 3/28/2002 username
4 3/28/2002 username
8 3/28/2002 username
0 3/28/2002 username
2 3/28/2002 username
18 3/28/2002 username
12 3/28/2002 username
-- username 3/28/2002 username
-- username 3/28/2002 username
0 3/28/2002 username
16 3/28/2002 username
9 3/28/2002 username

There are more kinds of trees. Above is a directory tree. The approach lends itself easily to other kinds of trees; just change the class of the parent from "filebrowse" to something else and supply appropriate icons. The markup remains the same.

Messaging

The usages above show linked icons with textual fallbacks, suitable for use as widgets. Simpler cases follow, where the image is essentially decorative, inactive, and amplifies a textual message.

Dude[tte]! That's not right!

In which we throw in another line to conceal a limitation in lesser browsers whereby the icon will be cut off if the associated text isn't tall enough. Use at least 2 lines to avoid. Or use Mozilla.

This seems to be about where you messed up. You can put this class on a table cell to mark it, f'rinstance.

Dude[tte]? Are you really sure about this?

What I'm saying is that you can't undo this once it's done, so be careful ok?

But wait there's more

CSS came late to the TLA party. It competes with Christ Saves Souls and Certified Semen Services, but Cascading Style Sheets is more than a religion or animal husbandry commodity: much more. It is a way out of the bloated, murky HTML generation and maintenance business. It is a way to cut the transmission times of your screens to perhaps 30% what they are now, depending on how bad you've been. It is a way to stop using HTML tables except for train schedule-style tabular data. No more font tags, no more spacer GIFs, no more GIFs of text. And still look good - better even than with all the painful crufty techniques just mentioned.

Now enriched with solid gold.
